Period Think Tank is made up of members with diverse backgrounds, locations, and fields of expertise: researchers, professionals in international cooperation, communication, architecture, and sociology, as well as undergraduate and graduate students.
We are united by a common drive to bridge the gender gap through advocacy, policy proposals and data-driven projects. For us, feminism is a way of thinking, analyzing, and sharing knowledge to empower society as a whole.
Data feminism in action
- Our mission is to encourage public institutions and civil society to recognize the importance of an open, gender-sensitive data culture in designing fair and equitable public policies.
- We support municipalities and local authorities in preparing gender budgets and train technical and political staff on feminist urban planning.
- We create surveys and reports covering all dimensions of urban living, as well as the quality of life for women and LGBTQIA+ people.
- We launch advocacy campaigns to shape public decision-making, leveraging pressure on decision-makers and leaders to advance human rights and social justice.
- We also focus on technology, algorithmic bias and artificial intelligence.

We demand open gender data, collect and process information, and publish reports through an intersectional feminist lens.
Advocacy
We design advocacy strategies that bridge grassroots communities and institutions, shaping public opinion to drive meaningful change.

Our Team
Giulia graduated in International and Diplomatic Affairs from the University of Bologna, where she also served as a teaching assistant for the course “History and Institutions of Mediterranean Countries” in the Faculty of Political Science. She has contributed to Radio Città del Capo, “Abjad” – Radio Radicale, Medarabnews, and Arab Media Report. After a Master’s degree in Communication, Fundraising, and Campaigning, she has been working since 2013 at the Fondazione OPIMM Onlus in Bologna as Head of Development and Communication. She co-founded and served as President of the association Candidamente (2010–2017), promoting active citizenship in Bologna. From 2017 to 2020, she was President of Associazione Orlando, which founded and manages the Women’s Center (Centro delle Donne, which also houses the Italian Women’s Library and the Women’s History Archives), in partnership with the Municipality of Bologna. In late 2020, she co-founded Period Think Tank. She is an active campaigner across various local and national networks fighting against gender inequality.
Architect and researcher. She holds three degrees in architecture from Sapienza University of Rome, specializing in restoration with a research focus on the study and enhancement of contemporary architectural heritage from 1920 to 1960. Since 2016, she has taught at the academic level in courses covering the history of architecture, history of design, and the history of urban transformations. Since 2022, she has been a PhD candidate in Public Management and Governance at the University Tor Vergata in Rome, working on a thesis that lies at the intersection between architecture and economics. She is also Head of Urban Regeneration and Innovation at Open Impact, a research spin-off of the Bicocca University of Milan, where she focuses on data analysis, social, environmental, and economic impact assessment, feasibility studies, and context analysis for complex urban regeneration projects, smart cities, and urban policy.
Independent researcher, lecturer, trainer, and ethics consultant for businesses, foundations, NGOs, non-profit associations and public administrations. Her background includes international academic and professional experience. She holds a PhD in General and Clinical Psychology, specializing in cognitive processes and ecological systems. Her work focuses on data ethics and gender data, as well as the role of cognitive processes and open knowledge (open access publishing, open education, open data) in in shaping public ethics and advancing the right to the city, especially across smart city ecosystems. As a consultant, she focuses on designing effective, inclusive processes to reduce inequalities and enhance public and social communication.
Adjunct Professor of “Theory and Techniques of Public Communication” at the University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum). Co-founder of the Iperbole Civic Network, she served as Director of the Digital Agenda for the Municipality of Bologna until 2015. She works as a journalist, trainer, consultant, and European project designer. She has been a speaker on online participation and the public/community use of ICTs at the MIT Media Lab, OECD, IPTS, and other European Commission venues, as well as in various international academic, NGO, foundation, and research settings. Her publications and papers cover public communication, new media, open government, and the use of the internet for social inclusion, innovation, and community networking. She is President of the Italian Association for Public and Institutional Communication (Associazione italiana per la Comunicazione Pubblica e Istituzionale) and a Board Member of the Foundation for Urban Innovation (Fondazione Innovazione Urbana) in Bologna. She also serves as an expert member of the French association Villes Internet. Her core areas of interest include ICTs for smart and gender-balanced communities, gender data, digital rights, and digital commons.
After graduating in International Studies from the University of Florence, she earned a Research Master’s degree in Gender Studies from Utrecht University (Netherlands). A feminist and LGBTQI* activist since the age of 16, when she created the first all-female candidate list for student representation at her high school in Bergamo. She hasn’t stopped since. She has traveled across Europe to bring feminist practice into sexist cultural and political spaces, experimenting with diverse mediums, networks, and environments across politics, art, and research. Her main areas of focus include women’s rights, labor and precarious work, queerness, and eroticism. She has worked as a project manager in communication and cultural management for agencies, non-profits, and public entities in Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia. In recent years, she has specialized in political communication and strategy, serving as a senior campaigner for regional and European electoral campaigns. She currently works in political communication and press relations at the Legislative Assembly of the Emilia-Romagna Region.
After graduating in International and Diplomatic Affairs from the University of Bologna and following stays in Spain and Russia, her career took her across Brussels, Rome, and Bologna, where she managed institutional relations, focusing primarily on energy and environmental issues. First as an activist and later as a professional, she has worked in policy-making, public policy, and political analysis. Her passion for politics led to a few detours managing electoral campaigns for candidates across various levels of government, where she strove to integrate feminist issues – collecting a few wins and a few lessons along the way – while pursuing a knack for taking on unconventional challenges cultivated since her high school days in Campania. Deeply passionate about the European project, she can often be found visiting schools to spread the word about the EU founding mothers. With that same passion, she has turned her focus to the various dimensions of the “European Digital Decade” from a regulatory, political, and legislative standpoint.
Graduated in Mathematics from the University of Padua as part of the ALGANT program, she works in advanced data analytics at a leading company in the sector. She advocates for gender equity and social justice through an intersectional feminist approach. Through her experience in AGESCI scouting, she learned the importance of active citizenship. She actively collaborates with local associations in Imola and Bologna to support marginalized groups and engage in youth education. Since 2021, she has served on the Equal Opportunities Commission of the Municipality of Imola to promote gender policies, and since 2022, she has been an activist with Period Think Tank.
She holds a degree in Social Work from the Catholic University of Milan, alongside Master’s degrees and specialized qualifications in: Child Protection and Children’s Rights, Gender Policies, Diversity and Inclusion, International Cooperation, and Humanitarian Intervention. She works as a Social Worker in the public sector and collaborates with various organizations as a project manager and consultant on child rights, gender-based violence, and disability rights. She was the founder and manager of the social cooperative Insieme per Crescere, where for fifteen years she spearheaded and directed services and initiatives supporting minors and their parents. Based in the province of Milan, she is a feminist activist, as well as a human rights advocate with Amnesty International and a disability rights advocate.
Teresa Carlone holds a PhD in Sociology and is a researcher at the University of Bologna. Her work focuses on participatory cultures and practices, co-design methodologies in public policy and cultural welfare, urban commons, and collaborative governance. Long involved in local civic participation processes, she has taken part in interdisciplinary research projects operating at the intersection of climate change impacts, civic engagement, and social and environmental justice. Building on her background in transfeminist movements and spaces, since 2020 she has directed a portion of her academic and political research toward gender and feminist perspectives within public space studies and the representation of citizenship for women and gender minorities. She collaborates as a researcher with Period Think Tank, specifically focusing on data feminism and public policy through participatory and creative methodologies.

She recently graduated in Mathematics following studies across Italy and Germany. Enthusiastic about science communication, she teaches mathematics courses at H-FARM College and dreams of helping people who were intimidated by math at school to discover a true passion for it. A lover of all kinds of sports, she uses her platform with the Quadrato Meticcio team in Padua to champion grassroots sport as a powerful driver of equal rights, the beauty of diversity and sisterhood.
Currently completing her European Master’s degree in Official Statistics at Sapienza University of Rome and holding a Bachelor’s degree in Statistical Sciences from the University of Bologna, she is specializing in social and demographic data analysis through her collaboration on research projects focusing on gender-based violence, women’s reproductive health, and migration. She collaborates with Period Think Tank as a statistician, applying her technical expertise and an intersectional approach to transform data into tools for social justice.
He holds a Master’s degree in Economics and Economic Policy from the University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum). He spent an Erasmus period in Estonia to deepen his knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), and has been working as a Data Scientist for industry-leading companies since 2020. A member of Period Think Tank since 2022, he strives to act as an ally in the feminist struggle and to advance the goals of intersectional feminism. Within the association, his work primarily addresses the gender data gap, algorithmic discrimination, and AI fairness, while focusing on data management and data analysis across both Data Engineering and Data Science roles.
Academic researcher and university lecturer, economist, demographer, and social statistician. She applies an intersectional feminist perspective to her teaching and research, addressing topics ranging from geographic mobility and spatial inequalities, to the school-to-work transition and the entry into adulthood, as well as life-course well-being and the study of theories and metrics for developing social indicators. She has conducted fieldwork in Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa, focusing on well-being, multidimensional poverty, and gender mainstreaming, also serving as a consultant for international organizations. A member of Period Think Tank since 2021, she works to promote a feminist data culture across all levels of institutional and local statistical production.
Graduated in International Relations with a focus on European affairs, she has built a professional and activist career between Italy and Brussels. An expert in public policy analysis, strategic consulting for EU funds and political campaigning, she has dedicated her work to embedding a feminist perspective into institutional decision-making. At Period Think Tank she translates socio-economic data into tools for local advocacy, driving a data-driven and intersectional approach to Gender Budgeting.
